Taking you waaaaaay back to the chilly cold February of 2023....Larry was holed up for a few days in a home studio out by the airport to produce a few tracks for his dear old buddy Bobby "Gateweed" Gatewood from Cleveland Ohio. Bobby and Uncle Larry have been friends since the late 80's when Bobby originally hired Uncle Larry to play bass in his cover band called Calabash.

Every few years or so Bobby slips away from his cushy life as the mayor of Put-In-Bay Ohio and cruises down to Nashtown to make a record with the Nashville cats.

We are working at the legendary Headroom Studio in Donelson here and the engineer you are seeing here in this video is my dear old pal Rick "Sweet Ricky D" Delima. Rick's sweet wife Stacy helped out on the project as well with some lyrics and backing vox...and some delicious lunches.

Tasty live drums being provided by another fellow Clevelander, sweet Shawn Fichter....one of the sweetest human beings to ever inhabit this planet.

Bobby originally brought this tune in as an uptempo boogie woogie kinda thing...but i thought the sentiment of the song and the introspective lyric "all i was trying to do was find me" might possibly be better served by a wistful longing 60's hippie vibe, with some janglin' stoner guitars...so we proceeded down that path.

Then later on, after some group lyric re-writing and the addition of David "Bird Dog" Dorn's B-3 and bunch of tasty Haight-Ashbury guitars and some folky holllowbody bass, this track turned out fantastic.

When it's finished and mixed i will play it for ya.

Here's an old song from one of Bobby's earlier records (2007) that i produced when we were all very much younger...."Did We Try?"
This track has some bad ass cats on it....Joe Vitale on drums, Will Owsley on rhythm guitar. David Santos on bass, Mark T Jordan on keys, Troy Johnson on backing vox, Larry on lead.

Day 4 of a 7 day marathon session, where the Amazing Dawgs are re-united once again working on writing and recording a new Ann Wilson record at Smoakstack Studio in Nashville TN.

In this clip Uncle Larry does what any decent friend does when a guy is playing a pad on an old analog synth…he is working the cut off filter.

Amazing Dawg Paul adds some magic glue to the track on an old Prophet 5….while bandmates Amazing Dawg Tony and Amazing Dawg Sean look on in horror.

Zack Zinck absolutely KILLING it on the engineering gig....a top notch professional, and about the nicest, easiest guy to work with you could ever find on this planet.

There is no official “producer” per se on this record….so what you are seeing here is four hardened, brutally opinionated studio veterans who are all trying to function in a completely democratic fashion…which can be challenging at times….but so far so good.

Ann’s vocal on the track is muted during this filming, but you can hear an epic Paul Moak guitar solo at the end of this track, as well as some hypnotically adult acoustic piano stylings from a relatively unknown Youtuber from Cleveland.

An excerpt from a little session i did today at Castle studio here in nashville.

It can be tedious at times, but a big part of being a session man is straight up what i’ve always referred to as “target shooting”. You gotta be able to quickly and cleanly execute fairly repetitive parts take after take and be dead in the pocket….and trust me on this friends, if you CAN’T do it, they will find someone who can.

I borrowed this Baxendale Sovereign from my buddy Kris Donegan, absolutely GREAT guitar. This was a double of a 6 string “ganjo” part i had previously played, but ill spare you that carnage haha.

Can i just go off for a minute about how much i love Julian Raymond? I have done a million records with him since he moved to nashville 10 years ago or so….as a producer, he always has a way of making me think i can accomplish or play ANYTHING….

Being a positive force and being a cheerleader is a great trait for any producer to have. As a player, when producers act that way you just want to KICK ASS for them…. and conversely, when producers are condescending cunts you absolutely DO NOT want to kick ass for them.

And what’s with these brown bottles of rolling rock here??
