Homeskoolin’ Bonus “Target Shooting”

Chapters
00:00 - Session footage

Notes
An excerpt from a little session i did today at Castle studio here in nashville.

It can be tedious at times, but a big part of being a session man is straight up what i’ve always referred to as “target shooting”. You gotta be able to quickly and cleanly execute fairly repetitive parts take after take and be dead in the pocket….and trust me on this friends, if you CAN’T do it, they will find someone who can.

I borrowed this Baxendale Sovereign from my buddy Kris Donegan, absolutely GREAT guitar. This was a double of a 6 string “ganjo” part i had previously played, but ill spare you that carnage haha.

Thanks for watching guys

Homeskoolin’ B Roll Bonus

Chapters
00:00 - Couple of clips

Notes
Just a random mish mash of Homeskoolin’ related stuff…the studio footage is from a sesh i did the other day for my producer friend Julian Raymond, working with a young artist called Connor Mccutcheon….very nice lad he is…

Can i just go off for a minute about how much i love Julian Raymond? I have done a million records with him since he moved to nashville 10 years ago or so….as a producer, he always has a way of making me think i can accomplish or play ANYTHING….

Being a positive force and being a cheerleader is a great trait for any producer to have. As a player, when producers act that way you just want to KICK ASS for them…. and conversely, when producers are condescending cunts you absolutely DO NOT want to kick ass for them.

And what’s with these brown bottles of rolling rock here??

Chapters
00:00 - Session playing

Notes
The crude early stages of trying to fashion some weird random thoughts into some sort of song with Ann Wilson and her band “The Amazing Dawgs” …

Ok, first off, who came up with that name?? and even more amazing is the fact that we all agreed to it…

Tony the bass player has been seriously considering getting the words “Amazing Dawg” tattooed on his arm….but there have been a few threats that the band name might get changed at some point…i personally kinda like it because its just so unbelievably dumb.

I want to sincerely thank all of you guys for watching the channel and for all the kind donations…99.8 percent of you people are absolute sweethearts…

Homeskoolin’ Bonus…”Studio Rat”

Chapters
00:00 - Playing on a session

Notes
At various points in my life i have actually considered just having a pair of headphones surgically attached to my head…but alas i never go through with it.

There was a funny little chat on the session today about which Nashville studio guys are known for having the loudest headphones historically…there are a couple guys who’s names ALWAYS gets mentioned in that conversation.

I ain’t gonna lie, I like my phones pretty bangin’, but i have been around some cats who have their phones so fucking loud you can’t even get near them, let alone put them over your ears.

It’s truly a wonder that i am not totally deaf after basically having headphones on for eight hours a day for about 25 years.

The tune i was playing in this clip is just a little “sea shanty” feel in D….6/8 time signature. That’s my old ‘38 Bone I’m floggin’ on.

Today was a double at Sound Emporium A for a guy named Corey Smith, i think he’s from Georgia but he is part of the Texas country scene…

The engineer was Chad Carlson
Producer was Erik Dylan
Me and Rob Mcnelley on guitars
“The Craig” Young on bass
Nir Z on drums
Jenee Fleenor on fiddle
Andy Sheridan on keys

Notes
Hello class!!! Its your weird old uncle….tonites lesson teaches you how to play "Space Wagon" from the Trip The Witch record that came out recently. This track is probably my personal fave on the album, although its a bit of a wall flower at first glance.

Today was day one of a four day Morgan Wallen record at Blackbird studios in Nashville….its nice to be able to camp out for a few days and get weird…bring out the weird toys.

I’m actually totally serious about eventually making the move to all combo amps….the big head/cabinet scenario has served me well for many years, but I always like to keep evolving and trying new things.

Thanks so much for the kind words about the TTW album, Dean and I really appreciate it.

Homeskoolin’ Session Update Part 1 “Acoustic Fever”

Chapters
00:00 - Acoustic track playing

Notes
Monday August 9th 2021…Soultrain Studios in Berry Hill.
Working on a project with an extremely talented Aussie fella named Wes Dean.

Wes sang, played some great acoustic and blew me away with some absolutely wicked Bob Dylan/Neil Young style harmonica playing….(which is one thing we are SORELY lacking here in the Nashville session scene in my opinion).
Corky Courtelyou producing and engineering.
Kyle Blunt Pro Tools operator.
I played electric and a bit of acoustic as you see here.
The legendary Freddie Eltringham on drums.
Adam Beard on an olive drab P bass.
Charlie Lowell on keys.

I know it sucks when you can’t hear the context of the track that I am playing along with, but unfortunately thats all I can give you guys without pissing off the artist I am working for.

The guitar I'm playing is a 1937 Gibson Advanced Jumbo that I just recently purchased from Gruhn Guitars. I had to sell about five guitars to even remotely afford it but thats just fine with me....the thing is truly not of this earth.
