Homeskoolin’ Bonus “The First Night We Fell In Love”

Chapters
00:00 - Empress ParaEQ Deluxe pedal showcase

Notes
Here’s a long form video strictly for the true tone freak weirdos out there.

Don’t even bother watching this if you are one of those guys that plays through a modeling amp instead of a real tube amp because it’s “good enough” and “no one can tell the difference anyway”

Taking you back to October 11 2022 here….the first time i ever heard the magical new Empress Para EQ pedal.

Picture me sitting in my kitchen late one night with a pretty stout buzz on, trying out a bunch of weird bass pedals with my buddy Renn (who has perfect hearing) tweaking the controls and Ford on the camera, when i said “hey dudes, we should check out this new empress pedal the guy sent me”

As you can see here we were all immediately taken by it’s expensive sound.

Through an iphone mic, you might need headphones to really hear the subtle differences this thing gives you, but trust me, in the room it is hardly subtle.

Thank you for all the kind words about the recent videos.
You guys are awesome

Homeskoolin’ Volume 173, Tom Bukovac, “Set Lists And Spinning Pickups”

Chapters
00:00 - Joe Walsh Gear run through
09:48 - The man himself and some playing

Notes
11/11/22 Cool date right? See…cuz 11 plus 11 equals 22??…

Anyway, today’s video features Uncle Larry plundering and pillaging Columbus Ohio, as he rehearses with Joe Walsh for the big Vet’s Aid gig on Sunday.

Joe’s long time guitar tech Mark Reis walks us through all the gear….Mark is SUCH a sweet sweet soul…God i love that boy….fellow Clevelander too.

What a blast seeing all these sweethearts again….haven’t played with Joe or hung with any of this crew since the infamous last Tom Petty tour of 2017.

Today was also the first time I have ever played with dearest Nathan East…what a sweet cat.

The guy who made this crazy guitar with the spinning pickups is called Kyle Stanton.

Homekoolin’ Bonus “Stuff Larry Used To Own”

Chapters
00:00 - Montage of gear

Notes
When you’re bored out of your mind in a hotel room in the middle of nowhere, you have time to do things like this.

I wish you guys could REALLY understand the extent of my lifelong addiction to old guitars, amps, synthesizers, drums, cars….it would be hard for me to explain it.

As you probably know, i have never been one to actually KEEP anything…i have always thought that constantly cycling through cool old stuff was way more fun than ever trying to “build a collection”. To me its always been a quest to LEARN what this stuff can really do, and i always thought that you can only REALLY learn what something can do is to actually own it and use it in the heat of battle.

It all started when i was about 18, in 1987 roughly. I purchased a chopped 65 sg special for 350 bucks and from that point it was ON.

At this point, there is no telling how many thousands of old guitars i have bought and sold….i usually tried to keep at least one photo of whatever it was somewhere in the archives.

This deep dive into my current phone photo stash probably represents less than 1 percent of the lunacy of my old guitar/amp/car addiction….but i thought it might be fun to stroll down memory lane for a minute on a sunday.

Yes, there are a few i should have never got rid of….but live and learn i say!

Hope you enjoy kids

02:48 - Tony's Bass
03:13 - AC30 / Gear cont.
07:45 - Drum insights

Notes
I thought you guys might appreciate this little illustration of exactly why most lifer musicians absolutely loathe soundchecks.

Soundchecks are always just a cacophonous labyrinth of disjointed rude sounds played by overtired people with bad attitudes and short tempers, whose only REAL concern is the catering.

But more importantly….please listen closely to what I’m about to say.

If there was ever any ONE LESSON that you all learn from any of these videos, let it be this my friends….

unless you are using Rockit Cargo or some other PROFESSIONAL gear transport company…do not EVER try to bring any of your own gear on an international trip….it is practically GUARANTEED to end in tears….and cost you a fortune while you’re at it.

We are just now getting Paul’s gear back from Germany…our poor manager Dave was stuck in Germany for 3-4 extra days trying to deal with the messy gear situation. They wouldn’t fly some of it back because the cases were oversized etc etc, which is strange considering they had no problem flying it INTO the country. As of tonight we are supposed to finally get most of it, but some of it is lost forever at this point.

The only real rule of flying gear international is that there are no rules….just rent whatever you can, and if you DO bring something make sure it’s something you don’t mind losing forever.

Special guest appearances in today’s vid by the crew guys
Steve (the drum tech)
Justin (Pauls keyboard and guitar tech)
Michael (our manager Dave’s son who runs the teleprompters
Matt (the amazing monitor guy)
Gary (the amazing front house guy)

Thank you for watching folks

Notes
Back in the homeland after a long long journey, Larry recalls some of the highs and lows of the last few crazy days…the Session Man Abroad if you will….if you must….

Very sincere thank you to all of you for supporting the show…Uncle Larry’s small but mighty army is slowly approaching 70,000 members….and believe me, i know how hard it is to make the commitment of clicking on a video of an old guy teaching guitar when there are so many “shorts” on youtube of hot girls wearing yoga pants.

I appreciate all the kind words and all the kind donations…i truly hope that you all are learning things and that these videos help shine some light on the madness of the music business.

Mostly i hope they inspire all you people out there to accomplish the nearly impossible dream all musicians share….the dream where we ask the universe to provide us “a living” solely from playing an instrument.

Homeskoolin’ Bonus “Ceramic Animal”

Chapters
00:00 - Introduction to Ceramic Animal

Notes
This video was filmed a year ago, while we were at Dan Auerbach’s studio in Nashville making a record for a rock band from Philly called “Ceramic Animal”.

The guy I’m interviewing is Anthony Marchione…a real sweetheart and excellent guitar player.

There are some preview songs from their new album “Sweet Unknown” available on all your major streaming platforms….please take a listen.

https://music.apple.com/us/album/swee...

Dan produced the album, myself and Angelo Petraglia were hired for the project not to play, but to help the fellas come up with some cool parts and sounds….i only played a couple things on the album, most of the guitar you hear on the album is Anthony killing it on my old reverse Firebird.

Oddly enough the very first thing you hear on the record, a song called “Tangled”….counting off the first tune and playing acoustic is a voice you might recognize haha

I had a BLAST making this record…these guys are the coolest and i wish them nothing but success and all the ass they could possibly stand.

Keep in mind this was filmed during the height of covid paranoia.

I will lay out the Plexi Soul “down under” shipping situation soon….special thanks to Jedd’s dad.

Thanks for watching the show and sorry for the gratuitous “over posting” and shameless flogging of all things Homeskoolin’….no sessions for a while…a man gets “bored” sometimes….so then that man sells a few of his tools of war…so that he can then purchase some other tools of war.
